Indiana and Ohio (IO)

The Indiana and Ohio is one of the first short line railroads that grow into a major regional carrier. The line started with a short section of the NYC in southeast Indiana/southwest OH. The line started with a Baldwin switcher in a nice red/white paint.

The line has since grown with additional purchases, the most recent being the ex-DT&I line between Detroit and Springfield OH with trackage rights over the ex-NYC line to Cincinnati.

The Indiana and Ohio Railroad operated some interesting excursions on the former C&O Hocking Valley line in April and November of 1989. These diesel-powered excursions were centered on the village of Canal Winchester OH, about 16 miles southeast of Columbus, to and from which several short-distance trips were run. Some colorful and unexpected rolling stock was captured as well.

On Saturday, April 15, 1989, more excursions were operated centering on Canal Winchester OH. These trains were dubbed the Logan Flyer. - {Dave Colegrove Photo}

In November, 1989, the Indiana and Ohio Railroad operated a fall foliage excursion from Canal Winchester OH to Logan OH. Though never using this ex-C&O line, the excursion train was dubbed the Sportsman in honor of the name train that operated over C&O's main line through Columbus. The classy 4-car train of C&O or member-road cars was pulled by an I&O GP9 that had been repainted into its former C&O livery and numbered 6018. - {Dave Colegrove Photo}

In October 1990 the Indiana and Ohio railroad ran fall foliage trains on two weekends from Canal Winchester OH to Logan OH and return on the ex-C&O Hocking Valley line. Here are views of those chased trips. This first weekend's trips had six cars behind an I&O GP9 repainted in C&O colors and lettering. - {Dave Colegrove Photos}
