Griffith IN Track Work

With the purchase of the EJE by CN, major track work was done at Griffith.

Here is the assortment of trucks and equipment that I spotted near the tracks in downtown Griffith, IN yesterday. There were other trucks that came as I was leaving and several farther down from my vantage point so I know I missed several. Still, anyone driving along the road knew that something big was going to happen after noticing the growing collection of white trucks along the tracks.

The big photo op yesterday was the continued trackwork on the CN to ex-EJ&E tracks turnout. This has been a source of activity for the last couple of months but yesterday was an all out attack on the track work with over 2 1/2 dozen men and at least a dozen trucks and spread out over a quarter mile of the track after the morning CN train had passed through. It appears like they are widening the curve and re-signaling the track. They had already y added a crossover farther east on the CN double track. This was an expensive upgrade with all the manpower and equipment used.

I've selected different aspects of the work from where I could see and grouped the pics into "The Men" showing them at work and "The Machines" showing the assortment of trucks and equipment on hand. No chance to talk to any of the workers - all were in high gear to get things done - plus a lot of supervisors present. Must have been a tight deadline. Wish I had been able to stay around longer yesterday but bad weather and other duties pulled me away. Will try to get a completed shot of the the track changes today if they are done.

Not sure if the pics clearly show the before and after drainage improvement. Before, the track was nearly level with the surrounding ground if not lower in some sections. Afterward, there is a distinct ditch now between the track and surrounding ground and street. Should improve drainage from the track ballast.

There has been track work of some kind being done almost every other week around on the former Elgin Joliet & Eastern Rwy in Griffith. Up north Kirk Yard is being transformed into a major classification and intermodal yard so we see all kinds of MOW heading up there. Meanwhile the former EJE tracks are receiving all kinds of attention including the addition of a turnout from eb CN to nb EJE, crossovers, new signals, new track crossing gates  and this shoulder drainage improvement that these pics show. - Gary Everhart

Other Photos

These are pictures of the CN train bridge at New Westminster crossing the Fraser River. The bridge and swing span are 100 years old. The bridge is owned by CN and is also used by BNSF and SRY. Most of these were taken at the end of the bridge which the track splits and goes 3 ways depending on which railway is using the bridge.
